Verizon, Blackberry Storming your TV for Holidays
Nov 26th
Have you noticed all of the Verizon commercials for the Blackberry Storm – conveniently bundled with a 2 year Verizon Wireless contract ($199 + wirless service)? The one below aired on November 9th (see YouTube page). Recently I’ve seen newer ones and I must say they really make we want a Storm even more!

MULTI PLATFORM SMARTPHONE?
But… maybe you are not so attached to the Storm as I am, but want some of its features, and some of the iPhones and some of the Android-powered T-Mobile G1? If so read this.
Gears of War 2 Reloading
Nov 24th
Hit the Right Bumper and your reload indicator starts moving as your weapon reloads. If you can time it right, you can get a quicker reload with some boost to your firepower (depends on weapon) if you press the Reload button (Right Bumper) again while the indicator moves across the white or gray area.
MORE RELOADING
Want another edge in Gears of War 2, either over your single player Locust opponents or multiplayer human opponents? I played the original Gears of War countless times and never realized you could reload while doing a roadie run! Actually, I’m not sure that you could in the original, but you surely can in Gears 2.
You might have to tilt your hand slightly to get it done but its not difficult at all. So, run, shoot, run & reload and shoot some more! It might not be something you can do in every battle, but it can give you the edge

Gears of War 2 Tip: Intestinal Fortitude – Avoid Suffocating
Nov 23rd
In Gears of War 2′s Intestinal Fortitude one of the goals is “Pass through … quickly to avoid suffocation“, its difficult to see, and its a maze. You have about 30 seconds to 1 minute (that’s a guesstimate, I didn’t time it) before you start dying and things literally start getting dark. You need to focus on remembering where NOT to go next time so if/when you do die you can avoid the same dead ends.
When you hear Dom say “Dead end,” don’t wait to see it, turn around immediately and try a different way. Don’t try going back out from where you entered because you will still die.
The key is to stick to the brightest paths. When you see a path that’s dark go the other way.

Gears of War 2 Intestinal Fortitude’s Avoid Jets and Pools of Acid
Nov 23rd
In Gears of War 2′s Intestinal Fortitude one of the goals is “Avoid Jets and Pools of Acid”. If you take the left or right path you still face the same problem – acid.
DO: Step up to the green acidy area, but not into it, then shoot the glowing green tip of the acid jet and when it stops spraying do a roadie run to the clearing on the other side. When you get to the 2 acid nozzles you have to stop them both from spraying acid within short seconds of one another. If you miss the second one, wait till the first starts spraying and start over again so you can get them both off giving you enough time to run across before one of them starts spraying. If you get killed the first time or two you’ll get a better idea of how much time you have to shoot them both to turn them off.
DON’T: Bother trying to just run through the acid as it sprays out, you will die before you reach the clearing on the other side. Also, when you get on the other side don’t stray from the path or you will walk into acid on the other side and die – quickly!

Getting Past Cranes of Gears of War 2
Nov 23rd
Are you stuck at the cranes on Gears of War 2? I was trying to figure out how to make a bridge first, but that’s not the answer. Just swing the crane over to the far left so Dom can get on. Move him over toward the other crane on the right. But give him a chance to shoot all of the bad guys before dropping him off there or you may be ferrying him across the chasm several times until he gets lucky enough to survies the 2 or 3 waves of Locust soldiers.
I’ve heard of bugs in getting Dom on and off although I haven’t experienced this myself. Never having this happened to me I would suggest:
- If Dom won’t get on: Gears 2 does have some “sticky spots” that stop the characters from moving for no apparent reason, and you can get around them by backing up or turning. Apply this to Dom and a) make sure the wood is all the way down where he can get on, and if you are sure it is, don’t just sit there and wait. Pick up and put it down again.
- If Dom won’t get off, or just walks away and doesn’t bring you over: Try to keep Dom up so he can kill all of the Locust soldiers. If he just won’t get off try putting him down in different spots.

Gears of War 2 Aiming
Nov 22nd
AIMING: GO FOR THE WEAK POINT
In the original Gears of War I noticed a weak point in the Locust soldiers around their knees, concentrate some fire, they fall, reload, then finish them off. In Gears of War 2 the same thing still works, but watch for the Locust to get up more quickly as if they had simply tripped and fallen. Also it seems a little more difficult to hit the Locust there for some reason in Gears 2.
AIMING: GO FOR THE HEADSHOT
1. LONGSHOT SNIPER RIFLE: The king of headshots, simply aim + zoom (hold LT + click right thumbstick) at a reasonable distance then fire and one shot says it all. Aim at head, chest or legs. A headshot will be a one shot kill on Locust soldiers, a shot in the chest will kill in 1 or 2 shots, and go for the legs when you want to drop them – either because they are moving or because you are aiming underneath of an obstacle and its all you can shoot.
2. HAMMERBURST ASSAULT RIFLE: In Gears of War 2, the Locust’s Hammerburst Assault rifle has been re-worked a little. In the original Gears of War this assault rifle fired in 3 round bursts, but in Gears 2 it now fires in automatic and semi-automatic. Hold down the trigger and the Hammerburst fires off about 5 rounds per second. But, it will fire more quickly if you fire semi automatic by pulling the trigger as quickly as possible to squeeze off rounds more quickly – exactly the same was as you fire the snub pistol.
Second only to the Longshot Sniper Rifle when it comes to headshots, the Hammerburst Assault will pull of a nice one, but is more reliable if the target isn’t running. But, you can use the aim + zoom (hold LT + click right thumbstick) and get a nice headshot. It might take 2 or 3 rounds to accomplish this.
3. BOLTOK PISTOL: I’m sure its possible to pull off a heashot with the Boltok Pistol though I haven’t done it. The Boltok pistol will also get the job done… you can use aim + zoom (hold LT + click right thumbstick) and it has a powerful shot to be sure. Its one of those guns you really need to be patient or practiced with. Since your in-game opponents tend to pop-out, pop-in while you are trying to get your shot off, aim well.
4. LANCER ASSAULT RIFLE: Fourth in the “Headshot Countdown” the Lancer Assault Rifle might be able to pull off a headshot, but it will take several rounds. You’re not going to get a headshot with 2 or 3 rounds, more likely 10+.
You’ll need to get closer since you can’t aim + zoom, and need to rely on your aim (hold LT), then hold down your fire button and hope for the best. If you are lucky, or have great and steady aim, you might be able to pull off a heashot, but don’t rely on it.
5. SNUB PISTOL (ADDED 12/6): You can pull a headshot off with the Snub Pistol, you have to aim well, or get lucky and probably fire off several shots.
AIMING: GO FOR THE GOLD
TORQUE BOW: Forget about a headshot, with the Torque bow, just hit an opponent and you are guaranteed a kill except in a few cases. Oh, and don’t bother trying to fire without aiming (hold LT).
HAMMER OF DAWN: The Hammer of Dawn makes a return in Gears 2, but what self-respecting Locust soldier is going to sit there all nice and patient-like while you paint them with the Hammer’s laser designator? Still, its a one-shot kill that you can move around to get other nearby opponents.
GNASHER SHOTGUN: Forget about a headshot, with the shotgun if you are close enough a body shot will finish off most opponents with one round.
GORGON PISTOL: Fires some mean four round bursts, with a notable delay in between. The Gorgon will take out some difficult opponents with relative ease that the Hammerburst, Lancer, Snub pistol, Boltok pistol, and even the Longshot Sniper rifle have difficulty taking down before you find yourself staring at a fully red Crimson Omen.
GEARS OF WAR 2 AIM: NEW STUFF
There are new weapons in Gears of War 2 that are really powerful, though they generally have some drawback to balance out their power, for example no dive rolls or roadie runs while carrying them. The new weapons each have their own peculiarites for aiming to maximize effect, but I won’t be detailing that here so I don’t spoil the fun for you!

Gears of War 2 Collectibles – Giant Worm
Nov 22nd
Gears of War 2 collectibles have been expanded beyond COG Tags found throughout the original Gears of War. So far in Gears 2 I’ve seen:
- medical records & memos
- COG tags
- letters
- newspaper clippings, magazines, posters & notices
- more…
Inside the giant worm in Gears of War 2 without going into too much detail, after the cutscene with Ben Carmine as you move forward and off to your left is a Lancer Assault rifle (which may or may not be there all of the time, on all difficulty levels) and beyond that off to the left before making a right turn down the path is a set of COG tags.

Fast, Green Cars – The Tesla Roadster
Nov 21st
According to the Motley Fool, Elon Musk of Paypal fame brings us the Tesla Roadster, a green car powered totally by electricity with cost and performance rivaling luxury sport cars. Unlike what many of us have come to think of and expect from electric cars, the Tesla Roadster is not a clunky, slow, expensive experiement by some big car company. Rather it looks great, is fast and is reasonably priced for a sports car when compared to sports cars in its category (as fast as some Porsche and Ferraris). Heck Left Lane reports the 2009 Corvette ZR1 (abotu $104,000) is just 0.6 seconds faster to 60 at 3.6 seconds, but it will cost you a pretty penny at the pumps!
Says Motley Fool:
Tesla’s efficiency compared to a car getting 20 MPG is equivalent to paying about $0.73 for a gallon of gas — not to mention it’s completely emissions-free.
The Tesla Roadster | 100% Electric | 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds
burns no oil | pennies per mile to operate
All I want to know is how long before Tesla Motors turns its eyes on an electric car for the masses? It can’t be too far off, and I’m sure investors will be lining up if the company ever goes public.
