GATHERING STORM: Ascension tips

AUTOREPAIR: Yep, Baird will do some repair work when you take enough damage. Just the same as when you are running around on foot getting shot and your crimson omen is filling up (you are close to dying) and you take cover to heal, when the Centaur takes too much damage look for a place to hide or avoid being shot at after Baird says he’s on it.

AIMING WITH THE CENTAUR: (General Gears of War 2 aiming) Keep in mind the Centaur fires explosive shells like a tank, so “closies count”. Also, the turret swivels a bit slowly. Shoot Reavers and Troika as singular targets, but Boomers and Locust horde troops can be shot in groups. However you are a good shot you can easily take out a Boomer by itself with a single shot.

FIRING AND RELOADING THE CENTAUR GUN: You can hold the trigger down to fire all six rounds in a row. Its a slow automatic fire similar to the Hammerburst Assualt Rifle.

KILL BIGGEST THREATS FIRST: Basically that means kill the big stuff first – Reavers, Boomers, Troika heavy machine guns, Locust troop swarms (groups) and lastly single Locust troops.

PEDAL TO THE METAL: Don’t forget you are in a big tank thing, so you can run over almost anything that moves. So if you are shooting but getting frustrated at missing few or spread out targets, mow ‘em down!

DRIVING THE CENTAUR: The Centaur lets you turn the turret a full 360 degrees, so how can you tell if you are driving backwards? Hit the boost (A) button and if you go backwards and the turret auto centers then you were backwards and you’ve righted yourself now. Of course, if you hit the boost (A) button and go forward you know you are ok. The Centaur does seem to drive a bit odd backwards and can be a little harder to drive that way.

GEARS OF WAR 2 SPOILER ALERT: The information below contains spoiler information and is intended for you if you are stuck, and pulling your hair out.

NAVIGATING THE ICE LAKE: After the first shell falls making a hole in the ice, I chose to go right. Don’t go too fast or the sheels may fall right in front of you and you’ll never get that sucker to stop in time. You are going to end up weaving left and right, avoiding new holes in the ice, but your target is the opposite shore, you won’t be needing to head to the far right hand shore.

The opposite shore seems close and you may fall into several holes and die before finally getting across. Just keep reacting to the holes and trying to get across to the opposite shore where you see a “driveway” area that looks like it comes off of the ice.

FIND ANOTHER WAY ACROSS THE CHASM: Just do what the mission objective says, find another way across the chasm. The boost (A) will not help you jump this bridge over the chasm so don’t even try. Marcus and Cole will tell you what you need to know, just listen to them. Ok, if you’ve listened you’ll find the house through the trees, and if you turn left there you will see a rock jutting upwards into the air, almost a ramp-looking rock, huh? Yup, hit boost (A) and enjoy the ride.

DESTROY THE LOCUST STRONGHOLD: As you head down the path toward the Locust stronghold Reavers, Boomers and Locust horde soldiers attack. As you go downhill you hear Marcus yell “Dom, hit the towers!” That’s your cue to shoot the tower, so look at the stronghold. There is a gate-looking area at center, and to the left is a tower and to the left of the tower in the stronghold are 2 Troika shooting you up. Take the tower out quickly while mosing around to aviod as much enemy fire as possible. After several hits on the tower someone yells that the tower is almost down, keep firing and it will drop and take out many opponents. Be cautious and finish whatever is left and move on. There’s no point in getting killed after falling the tower!

BRUMAK! Fire, move, fire move. I must admit I didn’t try running them over. Some oen let me know if it works.
