More on 09-01-2009 Gmail Outage
posted a follow up to the Gmail Outage Tuesday mentioning that the outage was 100 minutes long, and noted the root cause of the outage
Here's what happened: This morning (Pacific Time) we took a small fraction of Gmail's servers offline to perform routine upgrades. This isn't in itself a problem — we do this all the time, and Gmail's web interface runs in many locations and just sends traffic to other locations when one is offline.

Even the big guys go down sometimes, it just so happens Google suffered this outage during one of the prime times of the week, just as the east coast was getting off of work - which ironically was part of the reason for the overload in the first place.
