SPOILER WARNING: HALO: REACH WALKTHROUGH for LONG NIGHT of SOLACE
You are Noble 6, the newest member of Noble Team replacing one of their Spartans who died in battle (“Spartans never die, Jorge. They’re just Missing in Action”). Your arrival doesn’t go without notice as you immediately become the subject of discussion – specifically the ONI-edited account of your classified, and somewhat mysterious previous assignment. Moments later as you deploy with the Team Noble, Commander Carter (team leader) makes it clear that while your skills are a welcome addition, your lone wolf antics are not. Team Noble mounts up in Falcons and you are up and away and the mission (and the game) begin.
FIRST FLOOR – ELITES, GRUNTS, ARMOR ABILITIES, AND WEAPONS
As you enter the Corvette’s comm center you will be greeted by Elites and Grunts. Take them out with your boarding crew’s help and look for Armor Abilities, Covenant weapons and weapon carriers – there were some saw Plasma rifles and Needle Rifles. Take what you want and move toward the next objective – neutralize the Covenant in the hangar so Jorge can bring the surprise gift…. a rigged FTL slipspace drive bomb.
Once in the hangar expect more Grunts and Elite, and watch for flanking. Once you get into a spot of “safety” and start hammering an Elite, expect another on your flank, or possibly some Grunts. Without much sound, you’ll have to rely on the red arrow indicators showing you what direction you are being attacked from. To make sure this doesn’t happen, be aware of your surroundings, frequently looking around so you see approaching threats before they take your shields down. Look around the room for Covenant “explosive barrels” to shoot at for fun and multiple kills wherever they are found in groups (groups of Covenant and/or explosive barrels). After your covey friends are all taken care of you’ll hear Jorge over comms, “Six, go for those shield controls. I need in”… and right as he finishes speaking gravity is restored and sound is back to normal.
Before lowering the shields for him, replenish ammo and grenades. There are Armor Ability plugins lying around, plenty of weapons and grenades may litter the floor. Also be on the lookout for Covenant Weapon Crates with Plasma Rifles, Concussion Rifles and Needle Rifles.
“POWDER KEG IS ABOARD, COLONEL”
Jorge lands the Pelican with the “powder keg” after you have secured the hangar and let the shields down to let him in. He brings a small squad of reinforcements with him as well. Its time to head for the bridge to set the Corvette to auto pilot so it will dock to refuel, with the rigged FTL drive aboard. As you head there you run into Covenant troops (more Elites and Grunts) and the Frigate Savannah is destroyed.
As much as it pains you, you need to press on – don’t make the Savannah’s sacrifice a vain one… after all she gave her FTL drive for this mission. Once on the bridge you meet more Grunts and Elites and at least one of the Elites is running Active Camouflage and another running evade… the latter is quick so try to take him out while keeping an eye out for the Elite-shaped “inviso bubble” running around. Once you see him, before he fades into full invisibility again, shoot him and maybe toss a grenade nearby. Also, you can watch your radar carefully and it may pick up cloaked Elites before you see them.
Also, keep an eye out for a Covenant Equipment carrier with Energy Swords off to the right after you enter the room.
I ran out of ammo here for both of my weapons, and in close quarters an Energy Sword is great. After you secure the bridge its time to set the automatic refueling run, the console is at the rear left of the room from where you entered.
On your way back to the hangar to regroup with Jorge, as you approach the doors to exit the bridge you will run into some more Covenant, dispatch them holding back your best for the upcoming battle in the hangar.
As you continue through the winding passages and exit into the room with machinery and the incline “stairway” on the far side (where you watched the Frigate Savannah exploding in its death throes) you run into another group of coveys, once again dispatch them holding back your best for the upcoming battle in the hangar. Head up the incline on the left side of the room exiting into another incline, a hallway, and you can see weapons fire from a battle already taking place in the hangar where Jorge is involved in a firefight. Did you save a Needle Rifle? You may be able to begin firing as you ascend toward the hangar up the hallway from a distance.
When you rejoin Jorge in the hangar you will have to defend the FTL drive from Covenant attack. Waves of Grunts and Elites and more Elites attack. As you enter the hangar there may be a Plasma Rifle there among the weapons on the floor. I grabbed that and also moved toward the Pelican off to the right of the entrance into the hangar and got a DMR (you can also get frag grenades and health packs if you didn’t already use them up in your earlier battle while exiting the hangar to head out toward the bridge).
Its pickup color is yellow. – Armor Ability page
As noted above, you can “aim” your hologram. Just watch where your targeting reticle is, and when you activate the armor ability (LB) you will see an indicator where it will run to.
SEVENTY-SIX SECONDS TO ENDPOINT
Game switches to video at this point… Jorge informs you the Pelican can’t fly due to damage sustained during battle and that he has to manually detonate the FTL drive because the timer’s fried. So the big Spartan II takes off his helmet, gives you his dog tags, then carries you to the outside hangar door shields and tosses you out since the only way back to planet Reach is “by gravity”. After you have reached a safe distance, Jorge faithfully sets off the FTL drive destroying the Covenant Corvette and the target Supercarrrier. Six continues falling toward Reach, an explosive shock wave is seen. More particulars as gravity carries you down to the planet’s surface. Begin Exodus.
