My Internet Connection – Comcast Diary
May 5th
I intend to do some record-keeping here about my Internet. I was taking part in the GRFS Beta, and Internet disconnections are a little more of concern than regular multiplayer games since the beta is limited time event. Comcast may get around to upgrading my neighborhood’s hardware at some point but for now it seems Saturdays before 5pm are really heavy – meaning multiplayer dropped connection about every 5 minutes on average. I came back later after 8pm and have had FEW drops.
Probably no one will find this interesting, but I can keep track of my Internet service this way… the newest entries are at the top.

When I got the Service Announcement from Xfinity/Comcast saying “We’ve increased your Internet speed!” I got pretty excited. Then I noticed it also said “… with speeds up to 25 Mbps and we have more than doubled your upload speeds up to 5 Mbps” and my heart dropped. I figured it meant yet another drop in speed for me, but instead I got a mild increase so far (although my fastest since I began running these tests).

Its a relief to find out that Comcast was not throttling my connection because of some monthly limit, but they certainly did **something** while I was uploading that Youtube video earlier! I cannot believe I got 1/10th of the normal speed due to uploading a video as I’ve uploaded videos and gamed online several times before and its never had this severe of an effect. Oh well, at least its back to (slow) normal.

Omigosh! This is by far the WORSE ever. Played some Gears of War Judgment and wondered why actions were sooo slllloooow and my scores were much worse than usual! I’m uploading a youtube video, but its never lagged me THIS bad, I can’t believe that’s the cause.

We’ve had Comcast out several times now for persistent Internet disconnects and they have ruled out or fixed any issues inside, including a tech visit on 7/9/2012 and 7/23/2012. After the visit on the 23rd the tech said everything seemed okay and he would have someone come out and look at the connections etc on the telephone pole, and we’d get a call that day or the next before they came out. Next, a tech came out to the telephone pole (though they did not call us) and did “whatever”. I say that because I did not get to talk to him/her and all we have are notes on our account that the services was performed, but no useful info.
That didn’t do the trick so again a tech came out again (8/17/2012) and ruled out or fixed any issues inside then he went out to the telephone pole and cleaned off some rust, cleaned some connections and the next step is wait. Well I still am experiencing disconnects so I’m not sure what the next step would be. We lost Internet connectivity on a rather regular basis (usually several times per day) and have the “best Comcast modem” for our level of service and I got an Apple Airport Extreme Router (airport extreme info | buy airport extreme), and everything else is standard, “normal” or acceptable.

Several lost connections on GRFS tonight!

Rainy day…

Friday, July 13, 2012
This one is after having Comcast come over for daily intermittent Modem Connection issues. They noted that my modem lost its connection every day on a recent Tech Support call and sent a technician out. This test was about 2 hours AFTER the Comcast Tech left.

My speeds used to be 2 to several times higher. I used to get insanely fast download speeds a couple of years back. More recently I was getting speeds around 50Mbps which is much slower/ Unfortunately l did not document any of those speed tests. Comcast evidently is putting a new “digital leash” on its Internet service. The speed drop from insanely fast to fast (50Mbps range) went unnoticed until recently.
