What the Heck is a Droid Phone?
Nov 18th
Maybe you are shopping for an Android Phone or maybe you want a Droid phone. Maybe you wonder…
What the heck is a droid phone?
What the heck is an android phone?
Aren’t they the same thing – droid, android?
Those are good questions, and if you asked me I would have said I wasn’t sure. Then I ran into www.DroidDoes.com and my impression was that Verizon had made a phone with a purposely close name to Android in order to capitalize on the wildly popular Android phones, but that couldn’t be farther from the case.
WHAT IS A DROID PHONE?
I found the answer through Google on the Wikipedia website, and evidently the Droid is a renamed Motorola Milestone and the name Droid is licensed to Verizon from Lucasfilm (can you say Star Wars?). So, Droid is AN Android phone made by Motorola and exclusively using Verizon Wireless as the provider – especially since Verizon Wireless is the one licensed to use the very cool name DROID.

What the Heck is an Android Phone?
Nov 16th
Unlike Blackberry, or iPhone or similar smarthphones, an Android phone is not a piece of hardware, not an actual phone called Android, or a Google phone, but rather a smart phone using the Google Android operating system. But let’s see some hardware, actual phones running Google’s Android – here are the Best Android phones as rated by DigitalTrends.com, nice!
With the HTC EVO 4G plastered all over the TV in commercials I’ve been seeing, Android might be seeing a big boost in holiday sales this year. Will they beat the iPhone, Blackberry and other smart phones? Probably if the current trend continues!

Android’s Gmail App Hits the Eject Button
Sep 21st
As of yesterday, Google announced that Android’s Gmail app has hit the eject button and punched out on its own, meaning Gmail app updates aren’t tied to Android updates any more.
As always you should check out the link above for all of the 411, but here is a quick rundown of some of the new features now that the Gmail app on Android has cut its tether…
- most important message actions will now stick to the top
- improved message replies
- access to quoted text (view previous message in thread)
- updated to support Priority Inbox
For more details including required Android OS version, a QR code to scan, and availability on phones, check the Gmail blog.
Gmail Robot – Hey its Android!
Nov 18th
Sometimes a snippett speaks for itself, and this new feature letting you know which of your IM buddies is “online” using their cell phone (hence not really online, but not offline) is one of those cases:
Turn on Green Robot, a new experiment in Gmail Labs, and you’ll see a robot icon next to people who are currently using Android phones. In the case below, Shirley is online with Android, Nicolle R. is using regular Gmail chat, and Chris I. is currently away but also on Android. Slatka is not an angry robot — she’s online with Android but currently busy.

Gmail Mobile on iPhone and Android – Faster, Better
Oct 29th
Gmail for Mobile has been re-designed with speed, usability and basic offline support for iPhone and Android devices. For example, smart links take long URLs and use names instead of the link text. So instead of something like http://www.example.com/2009/10/01/using-artichokes-as-paper-weights/ you could change the link to say Using Atrtichokes as Paper Weights.
Android allows developers to make their own apps for Android devices, but also allows Google to roll out features and improvements more quickly. The screenshot below is taken from the original Google post (What’s new with Gmail on iPhone and Android). See also video below.

Google Android Gets Boost from Kyocera, Wind River
Dec 3rd
Kyocera will be building a smartphone using Google’s Android operating system, as reported by CNET News dept’s “Kyocera joins Android phone bandwagon“. Plus, according to the Android Community’s “Kyocera announces development of Android platform” Kyocera, who was not part of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), will be working with Wind River to incorporate Android OS in a “new product platform” (as of Oct. 21, 2008 – Wind River).
Hopefully by 2009 Kyocera will have completed their “new product platform” and we’ll have another Android-based cell phone on the market. Now if only there was a cell phone that could run Android, iPhone OS, or Storm (Blackberry) OS.
