Gmail Adds Popout for Contacts
Aug 30th
Gmail has a great autocomplete feature when you are typing the email addresses or names of people you want to email. If you’ve ever had trouble remembering someone’s name, or email address then you will appreciate this new addition.
When composing a message you can now click To, Cc, or Bcc in the compose screen to bring up Gmail’s new Contact Chooser (in the red outline at right). The Contact Chooser has a search box at the top, a dropdown for all of the different categories of contacts and groups, a box listing the contacts that fall under the category of contacts or group you have selected, and a box listing the contacts you have chosen.
Contact chooser is a great addition and is flexible for different situations you may run into writing emails amdf can simplify writing emails a little bit.
New in Gmail – Email Your Task Lists
Aug 21st
Coincidentally today I was wishing tasks could be a more useful feature for me. I use tasks at work and I use them at home, but I wanted a way to shuttle the info between the two. Gmail has an answer for that and even more, now you can email your task list.
For example today I was thinking of some ideas I had to add features to the websites we create at the office. the last thing I need is another paper list, or another item on my daily To Do list! Just click the Switch list button at bottom right…
…and select “New list…“, and in my case I make a list called Future Work Ideas, then type in my ideas.. Then on over to the Actions menu, click Email Task List and in the compose email window just type email it to myself at home.
Such a simple feature, but so very useful and cool!
Import Mail and Contacts from Other Accounts – Switch to Gmail Easier
Aug 19th
Back in May I mentioned import email and contacts for Gmail being added, plus Gmail has worked more on contact imports, and now they’ve improved importing of mail and contacts from other accounts into Gmail. Its now simpler to move your mail over to Gmail than ever before. Says the Gmail blog:
You can even have your messages forwarded from your old account for 30 days, giving you time to take Gmail for a test drive while you make up your mind.
This new feature is available in all newly-created Gmail accounts, and it is slowly being rolled out to all existing accounts. It’ll take longer than the few hours or days that most Gmail features take to get out to everyone… Sorry, businesses and schools using Google Apps won’t see these new migration options.

Gmail Thinks of Notebook and Netbook Users
Aug 5th
If you have a lower screen resolution you might appreciate this latest Gmail feature in Gmail Labs if you use labels. You can now hide labels so you can see the email subject line, mostly for notebooks and netbooks.
On smaller screen resolutions – or whenever your browser screen isn’t adjusted wide enough – you may only see the from email address, some labels and… well that’s it (see the link above for a screenshot).
I guess if this one takes off you might see a button in the main Gmail screen for it later.
Gmail’s New POP3 Option
Jul 30th
When you choose to use Gmail for your POP3 email client instead of using a POP3 email client (like Thunderbird, Outlook etc… some) email programs show both your Gmail address and your POP3 email’s address.
I do this at work because I prefer Gmail for its superior spam protection, and because when I want to access my email I don’t have to be at my home or office, and I don’t need to worry about transferring emails, settings and such every timwe I get a new computer. So at myemail@gmail.com I get email from mywork@myjob.com, and until now some email programs would show my emails as:
From myemail@gmail.com on behalf of mywork@myjob.com
Not so cool, but now I don’t have to face that.
Read the Gmail blog post that explains how to do this…

Chrome Missing Print Selection
Jul 27th
Google Chrome is a great browser. I think its great that the separate tabs run separate processes that can crash separately from one another so that a crash in one tab doesn’t close all of them, and I like that Chrome is fast.
But, Chrome is missing some mainstream features that can make it a little aggravating, and the one that comes to mind is that there is no Print Selection feature. This means when I want to print just part of a page – and I do often to save paper and ink – I need to copy and paste the link into another browser.
It is a minor issue, but I sure hope Google addresses it sooner rather than later. If you happen to know **why** this feature is mising from Chrome, please drop a comment, I’d like to know.
Gmail July Wrap-up
Jul 26th
Wow! I’ve missed a lot of features lately…
Gmail came out of Beta (hooray!); announced you can now retrieve your password via text message from your cell phone (you must turn this feature on and priovide your mobile number for security purposes); launched a new feature showing their “super-trustworthy anti-phishing key” graphically you an email has been pre-filtered (in Gmail Labs); Gmail’s Tasks has graduated out of Labs, and is Gmail Lab’s first proud graduate; images in Contacts are now displayed automatically if you’ve emailed them twice (so far); and most recently launched a new feature to aid unsubscribing newsletters.
Hurry on over to these articles and read the details since I’ve just come back from vacation I’ve not added any comments or opinions except the simple “hoorray” that Gmail is out of Beta.
Gmail Labels – Drag, Drop, Hide, plus new location
Jul 1st
Labels, labels, labels. Although I arguably have too many labels in my Gmail account, Google is helping out in that arena while adding some other cool functionality… Check out Gmail Labels, you can drag and drop, hide, and more.
Mine has been auto-set for me by Gmail (as everyone’s likely will be), and now all I have to do is go in later and customize their settings – if I need to. Labels have moved up to right under the Inbox, and the ones I use the least often have been hidden. To customize labels, all you need to do is click the ## More link underneath of the labels you can see, (mine says 34 More) or you can go to Settings > Labels and you’ll see that settings page has changed.
Also, Gmail has retired their first Labs experiment – Right Side Labels…
All of these changes also mean the end of Right-side Labels, an experimental Gmail Labs feature. This is the first Labs feature we’re retiring. (The idea behind Labs was always that things could break or disappear at any time or they might work so well that they become regular features. More on that soon…) Now that labels aren’t in their own little box and take up much less space, moving them around the screen didn’t seem as important. We realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels, so if you feel strapped for left nav screen real estate without it, try turning on Right-side Chat in Labs instead.
Don’t forget you can also move conversations into different labels (out of your inbox, but into the selected label) just by selecting messages and then going to the “new” Move to dropdown.
