Greener Google? Sure.
Sep 8th
Gmail is cooler in the cloud. Literally. Google’s point is that cloud-based services (which are ever more popular) use less energy than their traditional counterparts. Of course, their post doesn’t make such a broad claim, they focus on some of their services and also said:
Cloud computing is secure, simple, keeps you productive and saves you money. But the cloud can also save energy. A recent report by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Verdantix estimates that cloud computing has the potential to reduce global carbon emissions by millions of metric tons…
We compared Gmail to the traditional enterprise email solutions it’s replaced for more than 4 million businesses. The results were clear: switching to Gmail can be almost 80 times more energy efficient (PDF) than running in-house email. This is because cloud-based services are typically housed in highly efficient data centers…
If you’re more of a romantic than a businessperson, think of it this way: It takes more energy to send a message in a bottle than it does to use Gmail for a year, as long as you count (PDF) the energy used to make the bottle and the wine you drank…
So Gmail away, get more productive and feel good about your part in helping the environment.
Electric Cars to Get Charging Stations Across South Carolina
Nov 22nd
I heard on the radio this morning and several online outlets have also reported that South Carolina is getting 80 electric charging stations installed – 40 of those beginning in early December, 2010.
Here in South Carolina, the electric companies, and hopefully, the economy will get a slight boost by the installation of these stations. Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, Conway, Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg, Rock Hill and Union will have charging stations installed for owners of cars like the Chevrolet Volt (pictured at left, image from Chevrolet.com) and the Nissan Leaf.
In the long run gas stations will suffer or convert, with a gas war sure to start up with companies like GM saying that they will be transitioning much of their production into electric cars by 2015. In other areas, adoption by companies like GE will help with the electric car’s availability and price. With help from GE (and likely other major players) these green, efficient electric cars hopefully will experience a price drop bringing them more solidly into the average car owner’s reach more quickly.
Plug-In Carolina, a nonprofit founded four years ago in Charleston by Jim Poch, is coordinating the effort with the help of two grants from the S.C. Energy Office totaling $480,000 and with support from utility companies, including SCE&G in the Midlands, Santee Cooper in the Lowcountry and Duke Energy in the Upstate.

Google gets Greener
Sep 23rd
It was just this past July I was in North Myrtle Beach telling my Dad I thought someone should have come up with a smart solar attic fan by now. As it turned out there are solar attic fans, but they’re not that smart and they also aren’t very powerful so far as I could see.
Recently I wrote about Google and your Electrical Bill in my other blog and just today I read the Building a future that’s clean and green on the Google Blog. All of this Google/Green has got me ying for this stuff to become a reality and I think with companies like Google stepping up to the plate we consumers might start seeing some changes. Google’s “Building a future that’s clean and green” said:
In ten years, we envision a cleaner, greener world — running on wind, solar, and steam – with clean cars plugged into a clean grid. But for that vision to become real, the technologies to power it will have to be economically competitive — otherwise they won’t scale. So we are focusing much of our effort on technology innovation to drive down the costs of key renewable technologies.
