Halo Wars Hints for Mission 05 Arcadia Outskirts
Apr 3rd
The beginning of 05 – Arcadia Outskirts begins with your troops running, run to fight another day (well, after your base is built).
MAP MOVEMENT HINTS
Left Bumper = All units, selects all of your units on the map
Right Bumper = Local units, selects all of your units on the screen
Tap A = select unit
Hold + A = paint to select units, move the cursor around while holding down A to select more units
Double Tap A = selects all of your units on the map of that type. If you Double Tap A on a Warthog it will select all of your Warthogs on the map
Ok, just scroll down, there will be no secrets, no surprise, this is a total spoiler.
Note – Winning: This is not the only way to beat this map, and doesn’t guarantee success. This is what I used and it worked for me on Normal difficulty.
FIRST SOME 05 ARCADIA OUTSKIRTS GAMEPLAY TIPS
Tip 1 – RUN! Don’t stop and fight, run and gun. Your units will shoot as they go but you will continually have to click X to make them move, otherwise they will tend to stop and fight. Get to the crater!
Tip 2 – INTERSECTIONS: Study the intersections (especially the ones near your base) with a strategic eye. Create choke points and kill zones for enemy units. You will want to lay down overlapping fields of fire. At first you will lay your troops in the emplacements with barrels in them near your base. As Arcadia Outskirts progresses you can move your forces farther away from the base, but always keep in mind if you don’t keep at least one unit in the emplacements near your base you are wide open to a quck assault or a rear assault.
Tip 3 – THE HIGHWAY: Yep, there’s a raise highway and its not just for looks, its a passage to/from the enemy base and they will use it to get right to your base. When you have enough units take the highway using the choke point that’s created by the emplacements along the road.
Regroup and reorganize in the crater, just follow the arrows and keep clicking forward. Don’t stop to fight, even though you may be tempted.
You’ll have to kill the Covenant in the crater before you can build your base. Get your base up and running as quickly as possible, though you will have a little time before the Covenant send you a welcmoing party to your new home. If you’ve kept enough of your units alive, and build some new units. I chose infantry and Spartans at first and stationed them in nearby emplacements since they are protected.
To the north of your base, is another base waiting to be built. Build, defend and fight until Omega Team arrives (6 Spartans) and comandeer a Wraith or two. Now at some point you are warned about a mega turret the Covenant has, and its nasty unless you stay out of its way – luckily it can’t spin 360 degrees.
So head north from your base, make a left (first or second left) and you will run into the highway (not highway access though) and an empty base pad where you can build – but don’t! Keep moving right next the highway sticking to the left until you see the Covenant mega turrett. Attack and destroy the turret making sure your units don’t move to the right where it will blast them a la C&C’s Obelisk of Light. All you need to worry about if you stay far enough to the left is Covenant reinforcements they will send to defend it. Once you destroy the mega turrett put Marines and flamethrowers into the nearby emplacements and build your new base.
After you’ve secured the intersection near your base, the raised highway leading off to the northwest of your base, and this second base you will have a much easier time, though the Covenant will still send more units against you. Get your second base up, get some resources flowing in (more supply pads). Soon afterward I added an Air Pad and a Vehicle Depot. Get 4 Reactors built so you can build Vultures for a knockout punch. I had to sacrifice some units due to the way I put infantry in all of the emplacements I found (including the one just south of the Covenant base). Gather some troops and go kill them off, preferably sending them to the north (far) side of the base so there is less chance of provoking a Covenant counter-attack. Each Vulture is manned by 6 population, so you will need 18 available for 3 Vultures, or you can mix 1 or 2 Vultures in with your current units.
KNOCKOUT PUNCH
If you’ve placed your units well, especially a couple of Spartans to the south of the Covenant base in the empacements you may be able to move one out to attack the 2 turrets farthest from their base – one on the raod to their base and the other just beofre you actually get to their base off to the right, northeast as you travel up the road (not the highway). Try to time your final attack so that you have a Mac Cannon blast available, send numerous troops from the raised highway, and also up the main road between the two bases. The Vulture(s) will help out in mopping up any defenses as you do this and you should be able to save both the Vulture’s mega barrage and your Mac Cannon balst for the Covenant base itself.
Halo Wars Hints for Mission 04 Arcadia City
Mar 19th
In 04 Arcadia City you begin with 6 Hornets and SGT Forge’s Warthog.
I list primary and secondary hints below. If you are not comfortable splitting your forces up then stick with the primary hints, but if you are good at multi-tasking and moving around the map go for the secondary ones as I feel they offer you better strategic positioning and economic benefits.
This is what I used and it worked for me on both Normal and Easy levels.
FIRST SOME 04 ARCADIA CITY GAMEPLAY TIPS
Tip 2 – HEALING: Try to be strategic with your healing; for example keep in mind its costs less to build a new Warthog or infantry unit than it does to heal it. You can heal the Cargo ships. When you plan to do any healing, other than emergency healing, try to get several friendly units around a Cargo ship and heal the ship and your units at the same time.
Tip 3 – UPGRADE PATH: The upgrade path I followed got me turrets add-ons of Flame Mortars (anti-infantry) and Missile Launchers (anti-aircraft), upgrade from regular turrets to medium turrets, upgraded carpet bomb, reinforcements, a barracks and an Air Pad. To do this you need at least 2 Reactors and a Field Armory.
Tip 4 – SUPPLY CRATES: Supply crates dot the map, so watch for them and collect them as you have a chance.
Tip 5 – NEW SUPPLY PADS & REACTORS VS HEAVY SUPPLY PADS & ADVANCED REACTORS: Start our with regular Supply Pads and Reactors and upgrade to Heavy Supply Pads and Advanced Reactors after you’ve run out of room – it costs less that way.
GET STARTED
Primary 1. Move forward (east) and engage the Covenant forces at the outside of the city square surrounding the subway exit, then turn right (southeast) and engage the ones inside the city square as they exit the subway. Then follow any large group toward their Landing Zone (LZ) 1, 2 or 3. This may help you toward the optional objective of rescuing civilians, and sets you up to protect LZ’s 1 and 2. After the cutscene where Cargo 3 is destroyed a Spartan from Red Team will come on screen and suggest setting up new ground operations, then Serina will highlight 2 possible locations on the map for bases to the southeast and southwest of the LZ’s just outside of the subway station exit where you begun the game.
Secondary - Leave 2 Hornets behind to help protect Cargo 1 and Cargo 2. Send them back and forth between the Cargo ships as they are attacked.
Primary 2. Next, move your forces to one of the bases Serina pointed out, I chose as my primary base is the one that was southeast of the LZ’s because it seemed more defensible. I began with a Reactor to gain access to the Carpet bomb and then built a Warthog.
Secondary – Send Forge’s Warthog along with 2 Hornets to the other base and start building. If you establish the other base first, it is the one the Covenant will launch its main attacks against and this one will only be attacked by scattered Covenant now and again, but doesn’t require heavy defense. 2 turrets, the 2 Hornets and Forge’s Warthog should be defense enough. Use this second base for:
- upgrade from Firebase to Station
- build a turret to defend the station
- build a Supply Pad or 2
- build a Reactor
- add Flame Mortars (anti-infantry) and/or Missile Launchers (anti-aircraft) add-ons to your turrets to keep your bases safer
- build more Supply Pads and Reactors
- upgrade from Station to Fortress if you run out of building slots and have time left
Primary 3. The flow of this part of 04 Arcadia City can depend upon whether or not you’ve built a second base… you will need to upgrade your primary from a Firebase to a Station, and build a turret. Next, as the flow of the game proceeds decide to build either a) a Field Armory so you can upgrade to medium turrets, or b) or a Supply Pad or 2. Add a Barracks next, and when you’ve got enough Reactors and resources add an Air Pad, though I’m pretty sure you could build a Vehicle Depot instead.
Continue building new units, healing several units as mentioned in the Tip on Healing, above. When the Covenant attack your primary base (or only base) they will sometimes attack from 2 sides, and at the end possibly from 3. I split my local forces to deal with both prongs of their attacks, sending the larger, or more powerful force against the largest threat. Watch the recharge time on your Carpet bomb, you may need to use it during the last minute of this map!
Secondary – There is a Covenant base to the east of the primary base. I wouldn’t stir up that hornet’s nest unless you a) come across it very early and its weak enough (I didn’t check) or you get farther on through the game and have upgraded your Carpet bomb and have some strong forces. Try sending a Warthog or 2 in there to see what I mean.

Halo Wars Hints for Mission 7 Scarab
Mar 7th
Halo Wars campaign battle 7-Scarab took me several times to get through, and I’m playing on the leisurely Normal Difficulty. First off I’ve got a video below from youtube, then 2 hints/tips. Pretty much you are going to fail this mission several times figuring it out.
General Tip: Hide, hide, hide. You will need to keep your units hidden behind structures as the “search light” moves back and forth, stopping only to fire. There are only a couple of places on the map where you can hide that are not destructible, and you must find them!
Halo Wars Walkthrough – Scarab Part 1 HD

HINT 1: If You Prefer Less Detail To Figure Most Of It Out Yourself
There are 2 main avenues of attack in my estimation, left and right. I didn’t totally avoid the center, but I didn’t make it a main avenue of travel for my units. As you go through the map you’ll find some ways to get the Scarab’s attention so you can sneak attacks at the Scarab. One of those ways will draw a lot of the Scarab’s time.
HINT 2: SPOILER: Just Give Me All Of The Details
Ok, just scroll down, but there will be no secrets, no surprise, this is a total spoiler.
Note -Winning: This is not the only way to beat this map, and doesn’t guarantee success. This is what I used and it worked for me on Normal difficulty.
Okay, build up your Firebase. The game begins with several thousand in resources, but still collect the crates near your base. Below I’ll detail choices I made, and beyond beginning by making sure I have 4 upgraded turrets and sending my Warthogs around to collect the crates around the Firebase I won’t lay out what order I chose to upgrade.
You start the mission with a Vehicle Depot, an Advanced Reactor and a Reactor. Here are the buildings I chose to add:
- Upgraded Turrets (4) - I tend to alternate them, when upgrading I place an anti-infantry turret (AI) next to an anti-vehicle turret (AV) all the way around
- Supply Pads (3) which I later upgraded to Heavy Supply Pads
- Barracks
- Field Armory
Try to locate and destroy the closest generator as soon as possible. Considering you are a Tech Level 3 from the beginning upgrade all vehicles, and use the Field Armory to increase turrets to medium (large if you have excess resources), reinforcements to get higher population, reserves to train units faster and adrenaline. Upgrade the Warthog all the way to Guass Cannon, and upgrade the marines up to Medic.
I didn’t use Flamethrowers, and you can’t upgrade your MAC gun, nor your base (yep, no Fortress).
Wherever the Scarab’s “search light” is, work on moving your units on the opposite side of the screen.
ON THE RIGHT
To the right is the closest generator. Get some units close enough then blast it with the MAC Cannon and you’ll understand why I consider these more than an *optional* objective! Mix your units to deal with various enemy units you will encounter – warthogs, tanks, marines, cobras and wolverines are recommended as a minimum.
ON THE LEFT
You can place units at a distance and attack the first generator on the left and make the enemy come to you – if you use one of the 3 special tanks you begin with and/or the cobra. Again mix your units (at least one of each, minus Flamethrowers because I just passed no them).
LOOK AROUND
Look around the map for hints as to where the generators should be. Watch for lower visibility areas where the Scarab’s field of vision is more obscured. Avoid being seen by the Scarab’s “search light” and it will be less likely to destroy the structures you want to hide behind!
MAGIC TOWERS?
I remember at least 3 sniper towers, and the one in the center seemed magic when I placed fully healthy marines in it (maybe their health doesn’t matter?). When I did that the Scarab’s “search light” saw them and kept shooting, but evidently the tower is magic and causes the Scarab’s beam to shoot harmlessly at the base. At this point I have moved up both sides and taken care of the enemy units there, and making sure I had wolverines for AA backup I simply sat my tanks and cobras off to the side and attacked. The Scarab seemed bent on killing those marines in the center tower and ignored my other forces on both sides altogether. As often as possible I hit it with the MAC Gun and special attacks from the tanks and cobras until the Scarab was destroyed.
Skirmish Mode in Halo Wars
Feb 15th
I found two real cool Halo Wars bits today – first that there is a Skirmish mode that lets you play the demo a lot longer than the Campaign mode demo, and second some really good Halo Wars Demo Skirmish footage on Youtube (below). The video (1 of 4) shows quite a lot of gameplay including starting a base, increasing technology level, resource gathering, and some small battles.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned in this in any of my previous Halo Wars Demo posts yet, but there is no Master Chief in the game since its a prequel. But… the good part is you access to Spartans from a time in UNSC history before they were all pretty much massacred by the Covenant.
Skirmish mode in the Halo Wars Demo (at least using my setup which is Xbox Live Silver, with one controller) lets you play 1v1 Skirmish mode on one map (Chasms) as the UNSC’s Captain Cutter. Its a really nice taste of Halo Wars while you are waiting for March 9, 2009 to roll around so you can get your hands on the real thing!
Halo Wars Demo – Advanced Tutorial
Feb 13th
I’ve spent some more time on the Halo Wars demo today, and I have some really short, low-res video. The basic tutorial was basic unit selection, movement and attacks. The advanced tutoruial begins with ramming enemy units with the Warthog.
The videos I took (mostly for the fun of doing it) are under 5 seconds each, sorry I don’t have video editing software. Here they are
Unit Movement – determines where you can see on the map
[832kb Quicktime video, only 2 to 3 seconds long]
A Warthog rams enemy -the Warthog’s beginning special attack
[1.358kb Quicktime video, only 3 to 5 seconds long]
Again just because its pretty cool I’ve taken a screenshot of the Halo Wars manual showing the first 2 UNSC buildings. Like any other real-time strategy (RTS) game, Halo Wars revolves around building bases and units. The economy seems pretty balanced to me (so far).
The UNSC base begins with the Fortress, then adds other buildings. The economy and technology level determines what units and enhancements you can access.
Thus far I’ve only played the UNSC and most of the units I’ve seen have some really cool upgrade/enhancements. I assume as a single player you can only play the UNSC, but I could be wrong – I’ve been to busy playin the Halo Wars Demo to even do any googling to find out.

Halo Wars Demo – Xbox 360
Feb 12th
UPDATE 8/10/2011: Updated the Halo page tonight
UPDATE 2/13/2009: I took a spin around the Halo Wars demo more today, read about that, too.
While downloading the Halo Wars Demo I read Game Invasion’s Halo Wars Demo post a nice appetizer for what I’ll be playing soon. I also watched several Halo Wars Youtubes to whet my appetite! Later I’ll post some thoughts on the game, the first of the Halo franchise to go RTS (real-time strategy), so it should be REALLY interesting.
