Why Do Christians Seem to Hate So Much?

If you’re here wondering why Christians, who supposedly should be such nice people, and follow their perfect Lord and Savior, are instead mean, rude or judgmental, please read on and leave any thoughts you have in the comments.

So, Where’s All of This Christian Kindness?

That’s a good question, and as a Christian, I have some thoughts on this. First, some Christians are still learning what it means to be a follower of Jesus, and they really don’t know much beyond facts like everyone sins, Jesus is the only way to be forgiven for sin, and you have to ask him into your life to be forgiven. Beyond that, they may have lots of ideas of good and bad based on their life, but not understand that they are supposed to be kind (among other things). The bible talks often about such things, like here:

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
– Colossians 4:5-6

Another reason that comes to mind, is the Lord takes us “as we are” at that time he saves us. The good news here, is that there isn’t any requirement to go off and become a good person so you can be saved before you ask Jesus into your life. You can’t ever be good enough to be saved, it’s a gift of grace from the Lord, all we have to do to be saved is to really believe that we are sinners and he’s the only way to be forgiven, and ask him to come into our life so we can change (oversimplified, but true). So some of us that are saved can be judgmental, hypocritical, mean, etc. The church of God’s people is filled with people who are sinful just like everyone else except a) they should be working on being less sinful, and b) regardless of their failures they are forgiven. No Christian is a better person than a non-Christian, because Jesus is the one that brings out any good in them, it’s not their own work.

I’ve got one more thought, for now, that I’d like to close with. Sometimes, the reason a Christian can seem rude or judgmental is because their opinion disagrees with yours on some issue that’s important to you. There are certain “accepted norms” in our society that Christians disagree with, and the reason they disagree comes from (or should come from) what Jesus said. Ask yourself, are you are feeling insulted, judged or angry because a Christian has actually been giving you an attitude and being rude in their conduct toward you, or could the problem might be that you 100% disagree strongly with what they are saying, and it’s an important issue to you? Is this issue one you’ve heard a lot about in the news, where reporters insist that Christians have problems with this issue, and that gets you angry?
